Achievements and Successes
We’re proud of our students and our community and what we’ve all achieved together:
- South Lake is the only school to be selected as one of the top three middle schools in all of Orange County for the past three years in a row, according to the Orange County Register’s ranking system.
- In 2009, we were selected as a California Distinguished School.
- For the last seven years, we have scored a ten out of ten on the state's similar schools ranking.

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support
In 2010, South Lake began implementing a new behavioral support system known as Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. Rather than focusing entirely on disciplining students who displayed negative behaviors, PBIS focuses on celebrating the kids who do the right thing. We have three expectations that are displayed prominently around the school:
- Take care of yourself.
- Take care of each other.
- Take care of our school.
Students can earn Shark Cards as incentives for taking care of themselves, each other, and the school. These Shark Cards are entered into drawings during the school year where students can earn prizes ranging from school supplies to clothing and accessories donated by local businesses.
By focusing on the positive, PBIS allows us to also target and provide extra support to students who struggle with reaching our expectations. Our goal is to help our students achieve, not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
