PHYSICAL EDUCATION GUIDELINES - SEE PDF INTRODUCTION

The physical education department at South Lake takes great pride in its program. It is the goal of the department to guide all students in learning fitness skills, sports, games, sportsmanship, and teamwork. We hope that all South Lake students will make positive choices regarding their personal fitness and health that will last a lifetime! To support this goal our program consists of 3 components:

#1 Team and Individual Sports

SPORTS INSTRUCTION : Each sport is taught as an instructional unit that includes individual skill instruction, games rules, and a major emphasis placed on teamwork and fair play. During physical education classes, competition is de-emphasized, and respect and cooperation is encouraged.

#2 Personal Fitness

CARDIOVASCULAR ENDURANCE TRAINING/CONDITIONING : Students will participate in a daily one-half mile or one-mile conditioning jog. The emphasis of the P.E. program is to help students improve in aerobic endurance, flexibility, muscular strength, and agility.

#3 Integrated Health Topics

HEALTH INSTRUCTION : To further develop each student’s knowledge and awareness of how to prevent injuries, fight disease, and make healthy choices where they connect to the physical education curriculum, students will learn about: HEALTHY HEART, PROPER NUTRITION, BASIC MUSCLES, ADVERSE EFFECTS OF SMOKING, and BENEFITS OF DAILY EXERCISE.

GRADING POLICY

Student grades are based on participation, performance on written exams/ assignments, effort/work habits, and citizenship. All students start off each trimester with 100 points, an “A”. Points are deducted for the following occurrences during P.E. activities:

  • -6 points= non-participation due to behavior (asked to leave activity)
  • -6 points = not following *P.E. class rules

*P.E. CLASS RULES : 1) Follow all blacktop and locker room rules/procedures. 2) Keep backpack in designated area. 3) No gum allowed, and do not bring candy or drinks to P.E. class or store in your locker. 4) Raise your hand for questions or comments, and listen during all discussions. 5) Sit on assigned numbers after leaving the locker room. 6) Do not enter locker room without teacher permission. 7) No pushing, shoving, or chase games. 8) Leave all equipment alone until the teacher gives permission for its use.

LOCKS AND LOCKERS : Keep your locker locked at ALL times, and do not leave any personal items out. All students must keep their lock on their locker at all times, unless they use it during P.E. class. Students are not to bring their lock home at any time.

Students are responsible for their own locks. Students must practice and remember their lock combination. Students may only use a lock purchased at South Lake – no other locks are allowed! Students must not share lockers, combinations, or change their locker locations. Items to be stored in P.E. locker include: uniform with tennis shoes and socks, small travel bag for deodorant (NO spray deodorant allowed), comb/brush, and other personal hygiene items. *No food or drinks are allowed in any locker, including water. Each student is responsible for keeping their locker clean.

UNIFORMS

Students are requested to wear the proper uniform (purchased through South Lake P.E.) including tennis shoes and socks. NON-SUITS ARE UNACCEPTABLE. Students may not wear a friend’s P.E. clothes. Students may wear plain sweatpants (no writing or logos) on cold days. Only South Lake P.E. uniform sweatshirts are to be worn. No modifications of uniforms allowed, i.e., NO coloring of any kind, torn, bleached, or any writing other than the students name.

MEDICAL

Students that bring a note for P.E. will still be required to dress out, unless specifically asked not to do so by the doctor, and their activities will be modified according to the standards specified in the note.

Students and parents need to communicate with the school nurse and the physical education teachers about any physical condition that needs to be considered during P.E. classes.

Parents may write a note requesting that one day’s physical activity be modified to allow a student to adjust after an illness, but the students will dress out! Students that require a long-term modified program are required to have a medical note signed by their doctor.

INJURIES: Report ALL injuries that occur during class or lunch immediately to the nearest teacher.

MILER CLUB

The South Lake Miler Club takes place during P.E. class. The purpose of this club is to give every student a choice in how they develop their personal cardiovascular endurance. Miler Club members will have the opportunity to earn 5, 6, and 7 (7 minute shirts are for girls only)”

FITNESS ELEMENTS

CARDIOVASCULAR ENDURANCE - MILE RUN TEST

This involves your heart and lungs. Exercise is aerobic if you breathe more heavily without being out of breath and you exercise non-stop for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Examples of aerobic activities include: aerobic dance, cycling, jogging, power walking, step aerobics and circuit training.

MUSCULAR STRENGTH - PUSH-UPS TEST

The ability of a muscle to exert force. Strength is measured as the amount of force a muscle can produce. For example: jumping high in basketball, doing push-ups, having a powerful tennis serve, moving a heavy chair.

MUSCULAR ENDURANCE - CURL-UPS TEST

The ability to contract the muscles many times without tiring. For example: wrestling, rowing, sprinting, curl-ups.

FLEXIBILITY- SHOULDER STRETCH TEST

The ability to move the joints of the body through a full range of motion. Flexibility reduces chance of injury and improves performance in sports and dance.

BODY COMPOSITION- HEIGHT and WEIGHT

The proportion of fat-free mass (such as muscle, bone, organs, and tissues) to fat mass in the body.

CHARACTER EDUCATION

To build strong character within all of our students, character education instruction is included during physical education classes. Topics include honesty, integrity, loyalty, compassion, perseverance, and respect. All students are expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship and fair play during all activity.

LUNCHTIME SPORTS and AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

We offer a lunchtime sports program that is designed to provide our students with positive activities to look forward to. Participation in this program is voluntary. In addition, The City of Irvine Community Services offers after school programs. Look for flyers with information that through Youth Action Team (Y.A.T.) or call 949-724-6744.
