Annual Donald Bren Honors Concert
Congratulations to all South Lake sharks, both choir and orchestra students, who participated in IPSF and IUSD's honors concert at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on March 16th. A special thanks goes out to our very own Mr. Grenier for coordinating the show backstage.
National History Day Update!
On Saturday, March 11, South Lake sent 19 students to participate in the Orange County Regionals of National History Day. 8th grader Mia S. (pictured bottom left) is a finalist for her website entry and will continue on to the state competition in April! 7th grader Katherine O. received a Judges' Choice award for her website on Rachel Carson for her "Outstanding Understanding of Point of View."
Congratulations to Mia and Katherine and to all of our South Lake participants, pictured bottom right with Mr. Leavey and Mr. Fleming. Thank you, Mr. Leavey, for your continued guidance and support of NHD at South Lake!
Hoops Classic Superstars
South Lake had a total of 40 students playing in the tournament, the most out of all middle schools! Our 8th grade boys took home the championship, while our 7th grade boys team #2 got second place in their bracket. The 7th grade boys team #1 and our girls team played fantastic in both of their games as well. Congratulations to all of our players! Additionally, we wish to thank our volunteer coaches, parents, and Coach Doan for their continued enthusiasm and support.
Pictured from left to right are the 8th grade boys team, the 7th grade boys team #2, and the 7/8 girls team. Way to go sharks!!
CAASPP Testing 2017
Each spring, students in IUSD participate in CAASPP assessments to provide information about their skills in English, mathematics, and science. Given online, the tests are computer-adaptive, allowing for more precise measurement of individual skills. Based on your student's grade, they may take one or more of the following tests this year: Smarter Balanced Assessments in English and math, Calforinia Science Test pilot, and the California Alternate Assessments.
Assessment results should always be interpreted as one of multiple measures of a student's skills. If you have any questions regarding your child's participation, please contact Mr. Kette. Click here to view the complete letter sent to parents and guardians.
IUSD Teacher of Promise
Congratulations to our History and Media Literacy teacher, Ms. Ly, who was named this year's IUSD Teacher of Promise at the middle school level! This annual honor goes to first- or second-year instructors who go above and beyond while demonstrating professional curiosity and an unbridled enthusiasm for teaching. Ms. Ly was recognized (and surprised!) in front of staff members and district representatives at a staff meeting.
